Mrauk-U Authorities neglect locals’ report about betel fields being destroyed by Bengalis mob on a mountain nearby Wathay Quarter, Alay-zi group, Mrauk-U Township, at 11pm on 2nd January 2013.
“We reported to the police station and No. 540 battalion in Mrauk-U, so lawful action could be taken regarding the destroyed betel fields, but authorities haven’t done anything. They came with us to the smashed fields and asked us many questions. Then they went back without doing anything,” said an owner.
A total of three quarters of the betel fields have now been completely destroyed during two unprovoked attacks by Bengalis, who came from Pound-doke village, seven miles away far from Mrauk-U townhip.
“When our five betel owners patrolled the fields at about 11 P.M on 2nd January we saw a group of around forty Bengalis demolishing them. When they saw us they attempted to kill us. They shot us by using catapults and arrows, so we fled for our lives. Some of the owners were injured.” A victim said.
It has been reported that Bengalis are not only destroying betel fields, but also cucumber, calabash, corn and bean fields, which local authorities have not taken any legal action over.
Critics say, “It will be like a creation of conflict between Bengali and Arakanese, if local authorities continue to ignore local Arakanese’s demand to solve the problem lawfully.”
